World Description:

Miles is from a world where people with abilities aren't uncommon. They're not entirely well-respected, either, but that's due in no small part to the behaviors of people with abilites.

These people are called Conduits. They can control a variety of matter and use it as weapons, for travel or to heal themselves and others. Miles is one of those people. His particular form of matter to control is earth. Think dirt, rocks, pebbles, things like that. More will be explained below.

History:

Game world history, starting with the origin of Conduits.

Miles was born in Philadelphia, PA to Evelyn and Richard Hardy in the year 1994 (well before conduits started making appearances). His mother was a stay at home mom, and his father worked as a doctor at the local childrens hospital. Due to a heart defect, Miles spent a lot of time in and out of the Childrens Hospital until his transplant at age thirteen.

While this helped a lot with some of his health issues, he was still a fairly weak child, but that never once stopped him from taking risks, now that he knew his new heart was far stronger than his old one. And it was one of these risks during a family camping trip on the two year anniversary of the transplant that was responsible for activating his Conduit abilities.

While out walking a trail with his eldest sister, they happened upon a mother bear and her cub. The mother bear immediately went on the defensive and charged the pair and in a panic, Miles tapped into an ability he didn't know he had. While trying to run from the bear (an idiot move, he realized later) Miles tripped and fell down a hill, leaving his sister defenseless.

His panic and fear was so great, as were his anxiety and stress levels at the situation, that his Conduit abilities kicked in. This was painful, a part of his brain going haywire and sending what felt like electricity through him, causing him to shout and lash out with his newfound powers. A deep crack split the ground from where he knelt to right under the bear, the bear falling into the deep crevice in the ground.

This was at a time when Conduits were starting to emerge and gain the wrong kind of interest due to the behaviors of people like Bertrand and The Beast, roughly two months after the detonation of the Ray Sphere. While Miles parents weren't ones to fear Conduits, nor did they believe being a Conduit immediately made them a bad person, they couldn't help worrying this would bring their son trouble or worse. So they did what any semi-sane parent would do and decided to homeschool Miles, trying to work with him in secret with his abilities.

Surprisingly this was effective for a while. They lived on a large piece of land just outside of Philadelphia, so keeping his abilities a secret wasn't too difficult.

Unfortunately, Miles' luck would run out.

After moving to California to live with his eldest sister and attend school, Miles started getting a little reckless and bold with his abilities. He had friends who thought Conduits were cool, so he started feeling a little too comfortable with himself. One night, shortly after his 22nd birthday, Miles was walking to his sisters house from the bus station when he spotted two people trying to break into a car.

Using his abilities to throw an exploding ball of coarse dirt at the would-be-thieves, he managed to subdue and contain them. Unfortunately, someone saw. They got a hold of Brooke Augustine's DUP and within a couple days, Miles was locked away in Curdun Cay station.

The once happy-go-lucky and friendly nursing student was cut off from his family and trapped in a concrete prison he couldn't manipulate because it wasn't his powers that created it. And the woman responsible was cruel. Constantly asking conduits to demonstrate and work on their abilities until they were exhausted, Miles found himself growing more and more upset with the situation and the treatment of the people in Curdun Cay and while he would love to have been the Big Damn Hero in this situation...he was only there for four months. Augustine was defeated by Delsin Rowe, Abigail Walker and Eugene Sims and Miles was reunited with his parents and four sisters the next day.

It's at this point that Eli finds Miles and makes him the offer to come to New Dodge. He'll be bringing his youngest sister with him because his parents are getting on in years and he wants to give them a break.

Does your character have any close ties to existing canon characters?

Nope!

Why do you think your character would work in this setting?

Despite the rough patch he's had for the past few months, Miles is and will forever be The Guy Who Wants To Help. He wants to see a place like New Dodge thrive and flourish. He wants to make sure the people in it are safe. Not to mention, he's a nursing student and he'd love the opportunity to be part of the clinic and learn what he missed out on in college while locked away.

How do you plan to expand their CR?

He's absolutely a social butterfly. He loves talking to people, making new friends. It won't be hard at all for him to talk to anyone and everyone. Now, it might not be as easy as it used to be for him to form deeper relationships? He's got a trust issue or two from Curdun Cay, but he's going to give it his best and will surprise himself with how much he missed really getting to know people

What will your character do for work?

Nurse at the clinic.

Does your character have special powers or abilities?

He's a Conduit; a sub-species of humans who possess superhuman abilities afforded to them by the presence the "Conduit Gene".
Besides being able to manipulate different forms of matter, this also gives a conduit the following;

Enhanced Strength: This can mean, but isn't limited to, being able to punch through solid objects like pillars, walls, rock faces, and being able to lift heavy objects like vehicles and smaller sized shipping containers.

Particle Charge Manipulation: Conduits can generate great amounts of energy and force between molecules and particles around them, on them, or even part of them, allowing them to generate greater kinetic energy and other forces. Example: building up enough kinetic energy between molecules in rocks, sand and pebbles and being able to use that as a missile or using that same ability to create a surprisingly strong shield between himself and attacks.

Enhanced Speed and Agility: While Miles isn't speedster fast and never will be, he is able to move at faster-than-average speeds, especially when channeling his ability. In this instance, the earth under his feet seems to push him along. This also makes it very easy for Miles to get around objects in his path in what's commonly known as Freerunning.

Enhanced Durability: Basically, Miles is tough to hurt. He can take a significant amount of physical attacks before he starts showing signs of damage. He's also aware that he can drop off a building several stories high, land on his feet, and walk down the road like it wasn't that big a deal. This doesn't mean he can't be damaged. It just takes a lot, a significant amount of effort that doesn't let up can and will eventually hurt Miles.

Rapid Healing: Miles and Conduits like him, while impressively durable, can be hurt and can even be killed. Thankfully, if he can get away from a situation where death is possible, he can give himself time to heal provided he stops taking damage for a while. Or if he can get to a source of his element to absorb it. I'm limiting this to rocks, pebbles and grit in New Dodge, saying the finer, more powdery dirty in town isn't as easy for him to absorb as it would be for him back home. Whether this is due to it being from another planet, he has no idea. (spoilers: That's what it is.)

Enhanced Stamina: He can go for several days with no food or sleep, and even still be in top physical condition and able to throw down in a fight, but don't let him do this. Conduits are stupid. Someone make sure this boy eats and rests.

Miles Specific Abilities:

With his abilities, Miles can:

--Create a small 'bomb' that sprays dust and debris into peoples faces, making it hard for them to see and breathe for a couple moments. At this point, Miles can sneak up and (since he's good karma), half-bury people in a mound of dirt and leave them to be handled by the local authorities.

--Send a barrage of dirt clods, rocks and gravel at people in a steady stream, taking them out a bit at a time. This is a small-damage attack.

--Project exploding missiles out of rocks, gravel and dirt-clods capable of sending people and vehicles flying backwards. (Don't worry, it's not at all strong enough to break the dome.)

--Karma Bomb: His particular Karma Bomb isn't a bomb so much as it's a strong dust devil, capable of sucking in enemies and knocking them unconscious. But this requires a lot of build up in the form of subduing enough enemies before he's able to tap into it.

--Travel Ability: This looks a lot like skating in the dirt, but it's essentially Miles manipulating the earth under his feet to move a lot faster than your average human. He can also sink into the ground and travel that way, but this is used more for sneak attacks. He can also create smaller dirt devils under the palms of his hand to coast above the ground or glide through the air.

--Healing: Not just himself, but Conduits can heal others, too.

Inventory:

The orange prison suit he was wearing when Eli made his offer, a suitcase containing six full outfits, some sneakers. His hospital scrubs, laptop, a couple school books and a scrapbook his second oldest sister made him of family photos.

Molly will also come with a suitcase full of clothes and a small box of stuffed animals.

First of all, I'm not writing to each of you individually if I'm just gonna say the same thing to all of you. So, mom, dad, Marnie, Evelyn and Ruby, let me just start off by saying I really did miss you guys while I was in that concrete shithole. I thought going away for school sucked. No. This was worse. At least in college, I could call you guys daily.

But, I'm out. And I had an offer that I really couldn't refuse. I can't go back to school. I lost my scholarship and admissions refuses to speak to me about coming back, but I have the opportunity to continue my education elsewhere, all while being part of something amazing. And yea, I know. I just said I missed you all, but I really feel like New Dodge is where I need to be for now.

Hopefully, I'll be back before you know it. You'll blink and I'll be walking in the front door, fresh from Reading Terminal Market with a bag of donuts in one hand, and a couple pounds of dads favorite bacon in the other.

I promise, I'll be fine. And thank you for letting me take Molly. I promised to spend time with her once school was finished this year, to take her on a trip just her and me.

This is it.

We'll call daily. Marnie taught me to cook, so we'll both be well fed and I promise, if there's ever a point where Molly wants to go home, I'll bring her back right away.

In the mean time, promise me something?

Promise me when I get back I won't hear about a new sibling?

I kid.

Probably.

Love you all,

Miles.
